“Jesus saith to her: ‘Mary.’ She turning, saith to Him: ‘Rabboni!’ which is to say, ‘Master.’
Jesus saith to her: ‘Do not touch Me, for I am not yet ascended to My Father. But go to My brethren and say to them: I ascend to My Father and to your Father, to My God and your God.’” (John 20:16–17)
Mary Magdalene stands near Jesus, yet at first she does not recognize Him. Her heart is full of love, but her faith is still growing. Then Jesus gently speaks her name: “Mary.” At once, everything becomes clear. Love recognizes Love. She turns to Him with joy and can only cry out, “Master!”
This is how Jesus rewards her faithful love. She had followed Him even to the Cross and would not rest until she found Him again. Because she loved much, she is given the grace to see Him first.
Sometimes, like Mary, we seek Jesus but feel we cannot find Him. He may seem hidden, and our hearts grow tired. But if we stay faithful and keep loving Him, He will come to us in His own time—often quietly, calling us by name.
And when He comes, even one word from Him will fill us with more joy than anything else in the world.
Prayer
Dear Jesus, help us to seek You with faithful and loving hearts, even when You seem far away. Teach us to listen for Your voice calling us by name, and to answer You with love. Stay close to us always, and lead us to the joy of knowing You more each day. Amen.
